Historic Old Town Albuquerque

Near the banks of the Rio Grande River lies Old Town, the original Albuquerque founded in 1706, which was 70 years before the American Revolution. The aura of its storied past permeates throughout Old Town where its original village layout is still accented by adobe buildings some of which have been standing and occupied after 300 years.

Originally it was a farming village and military outpost situated on the Camino Real, the trail carved between Santa Fe and Chihuahua, Mexico. It had a religious focus with the original “San Felipe de Neri” church built in 1706 across the street from what was then called “ Don Luis Plaza” and today is known as “ Albuquerque Plaza”. The church was rebuilt in 1793 and has been in continuous use since its original inception. Many of the families whose ancestors were instrumental in founding Albuquerque still attend Mass at San Felipe.

Today Old Town is still a lively place. It’s the heart and soul of Albuquerque heritage making it a premier attraction for both residents and vacationers. The Pueblo-Spanish inspired architecture beckons all to enjoy and stroll the same paths that have existed for 300 years.

Shopping in Old Town is a delightful experience where over 100 shops and galleries feature art, paintings, sculpture, jewelry, weavings and Southwestern creations. These boutiques are interspersed within hidden patios, balconies, gardens of color and original adobe homes now converted to business establishments.

And when you need a break from shopping, you’ll find a plethora of quaint restaurants that specialize in the unique style of New Mexico cuisine.
